Rafiee et al. show the effect of dispersing (the process is described nicely in Fig. 2a) single walled carbon nanotubes, multiwalled carbon nanotubes and graphene nanoplatelets (from reduced graphite oxide) into epoxy. In terms of strength and fracture toughness, the graphene nanoplatelets from reduced graphite oxide lead to larger enhancements over the baseline epoxy. The authors propose that these differences in enhancements in mechanical performance could be due to enhanced adhesion between epoxy and GPL and/ or the 2 dimensional, plate-like shape of the GPLs.
