This paper discusses the covalent chemical functionalization of graphene for electronic applications. The fundamentals of a 2D graphene sheet are discussed from a chemistry perspective. The authors show that indeed the band-gap of graphene can be opened up by covalent modification of the basal plane; however, the reactions available so far are disordered and lead to large decreases in carrier mobility.
