In this article, the authors describe a functionalization technique of C60 with a Ag(111) substrate to produce self-assembled ordered 2D arrays with intermolecular distances much greater than those in compact C60 monolayers. They are able to achieve this by functionalizing the C60 structure with hydrogen chains that transform and bind in a minimum energy (V) configuration that places each of the C60 cages in equidistant zig-zag patterns. This work represents an outstanding experimental effort and theoretical description of ordered self assembled C60 monolayers and therefore warrants inclusion in Highlights in Nanotechnology.
