Femtosecond X-ray protein nanocrystallography

posted by Timofey Golubev, 06.10.2014, 23:25

It is necessary to increase x-ray radiation dose to be able to have enough resolution when studying small structures but this often results in large damages to the structures before the data can be recorded. In this work, they used ultrashort x-ray pulses that are much shorter than most damage processes which allows for the collection of diffraction data before the damage occurs. It is amazing that three million diffraction patterns were collected in this study.
