Magnetoresistance in materials is often described as the decrease in electrical conductivity of a material in the presence of an external magnetic field. While normally constrained only to systems with more than one electronic band, the authors of this work describe a disorder induced carrier density inhomogeneity that results in magnetoresistance in two-dimensional electron systems and persists even if only a single band is occupied. In this work the authors both predict and provide preliminary experimental verification of this effect, making it a well qualified Highlight in Nanotechnology.
