Semiconductor photocatalysis appears to be a promising technology that has a number of applications in environmental systems such as air purification, water disinfection, hazardous waste remediation, and water purification. This review article shows that the basic research that underlies the application of this technology is forging a new understanding of the complex heterogeneous photochemistry of metal oxide systems in multiphasic environments.
