In phononic crystals the periodicity of the structure creates a phononic bandgap which allows for the control of phonon propagation. The possibility of using phononic crystal waveguides to confine and guide mechanical vibrations was demonstrated. The functionalities of these waveguides could be used to design all-phononic nanoelectromechanical systems.

On top of using such waveguide for electromechanical systems, this concept could also be applied to laser and photon manipulation.
